Why Your Brain Won't Shut Off in the Saddle

You know that voice. The one that starts the moment you tighten your girth:

Best hypnotherapy for competition nerves UK
"What if he spooks today?"
"I bet I'll mess up that transition again..."
"Everyone's watching - don't embarrass yourself."

Here's the truth: This isn't you being "weak" - it's your brain stuck in overprotective mode. Like a hyperactive security guard screaming about dangers that don't exist.

3 Simple Ways to Hit Mute on Overthinking

1. The "5-4-3-2-1" Grounding Trick

When panic creeps in:

  • Name 5 things you see (your horse's ears, arena letters, gloves)

  • 4 sounds (hooves, birds, your breath)

  • 3 sensations (reins in hands, legs against saddle)

  • 2 smells (leather, hay)

  • 1 taste (your coffee from breakfast)

Why it works: Forces your brain out of "what if" mode and into the present.

2. Reframe Your Disaster Stories

Instead of: "If he spooks, I'll fall and everyone will laugh."

Try: "If he spooks, I'll breathe deep, sit up, and handle it - just like I did on Tuesday."

→ Practice this: Write down your worst fear, then how you'd actually cope.

3. The 10-Second Pre-Ride Ritual

Before mounting:

  1. Close your eyes

  2. Take 3 deep breaths

  3. Visualize feeling calm & connected in the saddle

  4. Smile (yes, really!)

Science bit: This tells your nervous system "We're safe" before you even start.
